Bergamo 2 Cities

The tour of this unique city begins with a guided tour of Bergamo Alta (also called Città Alta or, in the past, "the City", as opposed to the villages): it is a medieval city, surrounded by bastions erected in the 16th century, during the Venetian domination, which was added to the pre-existing fortifications in order to make it an impregnable fortress. Bergamo is still one of the four Italian cities, with Ferrara, Lucca and Grosseto, which have kept their original appearance almost intact over the centuries. We will visit the Piazza Vecchia, with the Contarini Fountain, the Palazzo della Ragione, the Civic Tower (called the Campanone), which still today at 10pm fires 100 shots, those which in the past announced the nightly closing of the doors of the Venetian walls. On the south side of Piazza Vecchia there are the Cathedral and the Colleoni Chapel by the architect Amodeo with the funerary monuments to the leader Bartolomeo Colleoni and his daughter Medea, the Baptistery and the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, rich in works and decorations. The church houses the tomb of the musician Gaetano Doninzetti. Via Colleoni, also known as Corsarola, connects Piazza Vecchia to Piazza della Cittadella and is the heart of the upper city. At the end of the visit, stop for lunch in a restaurant in the Upper Town. In the afternoon, descending towards the Lower Town, we will take a short tour of this equally fascinating part of the city. In the early 1900s, the neighborhood that today is the center of the lower city was created, created by Marcello Piacentini and in which the institutional headquarters are located. Adjacent to this is the Sentierone, a paved avenue which in past centuries was the station for horse-drawn carriages. Various public places overlook the Sentierone: the city theatre, named after Doninzetti, the Church of Saints Bartolomeo and Stefano which preserves the altarpiece by Lorenzo Lotto depicting the Madonna and Child. Worthy of note in the area is the monument to the Partisan by Giacomo Manzù. At the end of the visit, time available, departure of the participants.
