Vicenza and Palladio's Architecture

A day dedicated to a guided tour of the most evocative places in the city of Vicenza, starting from the magnificent Olympic Theater designed by the great architect Andrea Palladio, the only sixteenth-century wooden theater still existing in the world. The historic center has just as much charm: Corso Palladio, the city's main artery, adorned with extraordinary Venetian Gothic and Renaissance style buildings, the Palazzo Chiericati, which contains, among others, works by Giambattista and Giandomenico Tiepolo. The visit then continues towards the beating heart of the city, the enchanting Piazza Dei Signori, where the unmistakable silhouette of the grandiose Palladian Basilica stands out, built where the ancient Roman court was located. Palladio was asked to reinforce the structure, which was deteriorating over the years and his ideas, developed from the study of the ruins of Rome, would lay the foundations of all classicism in architecture. The Basilica was Andrea Palladio's first important work and is now the symbol of Vicenza. Palladio's genius is expressed in his ability to mask the irregularities of the building by giving it an apparently homogeneous shape. The statues on the edge of the roof are from the 16th and 17th centuries. Stop for lunch in a restaurant in the historic center of Vicenza with a typical menu of Vicenza specialties. In the afternoon, the Palladian itinerary continues in the hilly area of Vicenza with a guided tour of Villa Almerico Capra di Valmarana, known as the Rotonda. This is the most famous and imitated work of Andrea Palladio, whose artistic originality slowly presents itself to the surprised eye of the spectator in four identical facades. We remember that the Rotunda was also the model for the Capitol building in Washington, the capital of the USA, and for the residence where the American president Thomas Jefferson retired in Monticello (Virginia). At the end of the visit, time available and departure of the participants
